Teagan Jones, Katalogus, 2023, Installation: paper and thread, Size: 180 (H) x 190 (W) x 10 (D) cm
Within the fluid currents of the ever-changing Afrikaner culture, my art becomes a voyage of self-discovery. I resist the allure of clinging to old values and ideas, instead forging a path that blends tradition with the dynamism of modern society. Through my art, I articulate the intimate thoughts and reflections that shape my journey in defining what it truly means, to me, to be an Afrikaner. It is a visual narrative of influence, as I navigate the current history, heritage, and personal experiences, seeking to unravel the essence of my identity. Using thread, as my main medium, plays an integral role in conveying the fragility of emotions and feelings. With each stitch, my artwork becomes an unfiltered reflection of my soul’s quest to find a place within the captivating minefield of the Afrikaner culture in Contemporary South Africa.
From a young age, I discovered my love for art and creativity. During high school, I delved into the world of art and found it to be a powerful form of expression. After my gap year, in 2018, exploring jewellery design, I decided to pursue my passion of art further. Subsequently, I completed an Advanced Diploma in Fine and Applied Art, in 2022, at the Tshwane University of Technology. My educational experience has allowed me to develop my unique style within Surface Design and Fibre Art. Currently, I am working on a Postgraduate Diploma, with aspirations to pursue a Master’s degree. My ultimate goal is to make a lasting impact, no matter how big or small, on the art world through my art. I aim to share distinctive perspectives, emotions, and stories, inviting viewers to reflect and embark on their journeys of self-discovery. My body of work comments on the exploration of redefining and rediscovering my identity as a white Afrikaner female in Contemporary South Africa.
