Naledi Mosifana, Zip Me Up, 2023, Mixed media on Fabriano, 84 (L) x 60 (W) cm

In this artwork, I am visually capturing the effects of Chiari Malformations. A health condition in which brain tissue extends into the spinal canal. I have struggled with this condition from a young age and as a result, I live with a heightened awareness of my body and its inner workings. This awareness has informed my artistic practice.

I have intentionally used the embossing technique, whereby I pass a spinal cord-shaped lino block through the etching press to create the imprint of a spine. The embossed image represents the pain that comes with this condition. The placement of the zip forms a metaphor for revealing and concealing the sensitive lower neck area beneath which the extended brain tissue lies.
