Megan Parsons, Labour of Love, Wool embroidery on linen fabric and found object, Size variable, 2023
“Labour of Love” is an embroidered sheet of linen that acts as a tablecloth. It is decorated with designs inspired by my grandmother and her endless craftsmanship. It is a love letter to my family’s heritage that acknowledges the artistic creativity of not only the women in my family, but also the generations of creative women that have passed. The embroidery, almost overgrown, creeps over the tablecloth and wraps itself around the legs of the table. Its threads intertwine, ready to engulf the legs of the table, as if to say: I am here and I will be acknowledged. This makes the embroidery impossible to ignore, it forces the viewer to acknowledge its presence.
