Inga Lokwe, Binary Barriers, 2023, Cast glass, sculpted molten glass and mixed media, 160 (H) x 120 (W) x 60 (D) cm

In this work, I draw inspiration from my Xhosa heritage to share my journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and defiance against the gender norms enforced in my culture. I want to challenge the traditional views of how women should behave, especially within the sacred kraal.

As a woman who presents herself in a more masculine way, my presence may be seen as unusual in this setting, leading to judgment from my community. Through my art, I resist this narrow thinking, encouraging people to question the limitations of gender norms and the harm caused by fitting individuals into predefined roles. I aim to break free from these culturally constricting ideas and encourage others to question their role in this kraal.

With my sculptural forms, I aim to create images that speak a rebellious yet transparent language. When people see my work, I want them to reflect on their ideas about gender identity. I use the process of the medium to bring my message to life, telling intricate stories that deeply resonate with those who have felt restricted by society's expectations. Through my glass sculptures, I celebrate the attractive transparent beauty of the material with the hopes that it captures you and stops you for a moment to reflect on ourselves. Society has placed barriers which restrict and contain one, we need to break through these barriers and create transparency and acceptance for all. I call for a cultural transformation, where we embrace individuality and self-expression, celebrating diversity instead of suppressing it.
