Interpretation by For Pusch
D'obra means "from work" in German. Havaianas, or flip-flops, are a classic Brazilian product. The contrast between the clunky-looking feet and the light, turquoise-coloured Havaianas, which merge into one work, is striking. Turquoise is the colour of poverty in Brazil.
The work is both a symbol and a reminder of Nazareth's artistic work. For he is the artist without brush or paint. Nazareth makes art with his feet. He walked from Belo Horizonte in Brazil to New York for seven months without washing his feet. Only in New York did he wash his feet in the Hudson River. Why? He wanted to bring the dust of Latin America to the USA and thus draw attention to the water shortage in southern countries.
