Since 2019, eight art teachers from Bavaria/Germany have been rethinking art education in the context of a globalized world in order to implement new methods and innovative content in teaching. The State Institute for School Quality and Educational Research in Munich serves as an institutional base for this endeavor. Since March 2020, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the group has been meeting online nearly every Wednesday night to discuss the following topics:
- How can the practice of teaching art adapt to today’s challenges?
- How can we address cultural appropriation in teaching?
- How can we include gender issues in postcolonial art education?
- How do we approach the existing Eurocentric bias in German text books?
The working group is preparing a manual to help colleagues experiment with new content and methods for art lessons. The manual will be published in 2020.
